MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — The Monroe girls basketball team held Garfield to just six points in the fourth quarter to earn a 48-40 victory Friday in the Mountlake Terrace Holiday Tournament.
Monroe trailed by three points with three minutes remaining but switched to a zone defense to slow down Garfield’s Juanita Agosto, who finished with a game-high 23 points. The switch helped the Bearcats rally and earn their fifth victory of the season.
“We played good man-to-man defense on (Agosto) but she was still able to get to the rim,” Monroe head coach Matt Chalfant said. “We went to our zone defense that last three minutes and forced them to shoot jump shots.”
Amber Van Brunt and Alex Alexander led a balanced Monroe scoring attack with 11 and 10 points, respectively. A total of six players scored six or more points for the Bearcats.
“We told the girls it was going to be huge to limit Garfield’s possessions, so we wanted to limit it to a half-court game,” Chalfant said. “We were able to get the shots that we wanted and be selfless.”
The Bearcats face Inglemoor, which defeated Stanwood on Friday and is ranked No. 2 in the Seattle Times 4A poll, at 5:15 p.m Saturday.
“After today, we know we can win close games against quality opponents,” Chalfant said. “I think that will spring us forward into tomorrow.”
