COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho — A former Idaho state trooper has received a suspended sentence of three years in prison but has also been ordered to serve 120 days in the local jail and perform 600 hours of community service.
The Spokesman-Review reported that Daniel Charles Howard received the sentence on Monday in 1st District Court.
Howard pleaded guilty in November to fraud involving a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and possession of a white-tailed deer without a tag. He also entered Alford pleas to petty theft and felony malicious injury to property.
Judge Benjamin Simpson in ordering the sentence said Howard was under stress when he returned to duty following a 2011 police shooting in which he killed a woman, and after finding out his wife had an affair with his best friend.
Howard resigned in November after 19 years on the force.
