EVERETT — They aren’t just potters, and their new exhibit at the Schack Art Center illustrates that fact.
The Cascade Clay Artists have put up a show called “Anything Goes,” which is a great title. Members allowed themselves plenty of artistic freedom as they created new works not previously seen at the Schack, said Maren Oates, a spokeswoman for the art center.
There you’ll see clay sculpture, masks, colorful ceramic bowls, rustic forms and detailed wall hangings.
“Anything Goes” is displayed in the Schack’s main gallery through Feb. 6.
Cascade Clay Artists work out of their private studios in Snohomish, Island, Skagit, Whatcom and San Juan counties.
The goal for members is to explore their development as clay artists, and to increase the public’s appreciation of clay as an art form, not just a utilitarian craft.
Participating artists include Ayako Okon, Dinah Steveni, Karen Peck, Donna Perugini, Makiko Ichiura, Vicki Dodge, Kathy Huckleberry, Jeanne Gardner, Gabrielle Conatore, Phoenix Rising, Persis Gayle, Ruth Westra, Ruby Root, Irene Lawson, Roger Cocke, Teri Ronning, Genevieve Heuer, Jimmy Sharp, Maria Root, Carole Tolchin, Michael LaBoon, Erica Herrmann, June Haddox, Susan Cohen Thompson, Chaim Bezalel, Yonnah Ben Levy, Margo Grothe, Marguerite Goff, Comador Stewart and Chris Theiss.
In addition to the exhibit, the group hopes to share, educate and inspire during “A Day of Clay” from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 24. This event at the Schack includes free demonstrations and low-cost workshops for anyone interested in learning various ceramic techniques, including mask-making and hand-building. Workshop space is limited, so early registration is encouraged. Go to www.schack.org to view workshop topics and register online.
