LAKEWOOD — When fire broke out at an apartment complex in the Tacoma suburb of Lakewood, a fire official says a mother dropped her baby from the second floor, then jumped down after the child.
West Pierce Fire and Rescue spokeswoman Hallie McCurdy says the woman found her escape route blocked Friday afternoon. McCurdy estimates the drop was about 8 or 9 feet.
The News Tribune reports that firefighters treated both mother and child. They were then taken to a hospital..
The fire at the Eastwood Apartments displaced an estimated 70 residents, at least temporarily.
McCurdy says fire crews arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the lower level, blocking a stairwell to the second floor.
Six units suffered fire damage, while residents in 20 other units were forced to leave because their apartments had no power. One firefighter was also reported injured.
McCurdy says the cause is under investigation.
