Silvertips rout Moose Jaw 6-2

MOOSE JAW, Saskatchewan — The Everett Silvertips found themselves, behind. Then it was off to the races.

Everett scored the final five goals Friday night as the Tips rallied to rout Moose Jaw 6-2 in Western Hockey League play.

Everett found itself trailing 2-1 early in the second period. But goals less than two minutes apart by Jordan Wharrie and Nikita Scherbak sent the Tips on their way.

Dawson Leedahl added two goals, and Ben Betker and Kohl Bauml also scored for Everett (25-12-3-1), which improved to 4-1 on its six-game swing through the WHL’s East Division. The Tips, who conclude the trip Saturday night at Swift Current, have outscored their opponents 20-7 on the trip.

Austin Lotz earned the win in goal, making 25 saves.

Tanner Eberle and Brett Howden scored for Moose Jaw (16-23-3-1), which has lost 10 of its past 11 games. Warriors goaltender Zach Sawchenko stopped 20 of the 25 shots he faced before being pulled early in the third period. Brody Willms stopped all four shots he faced in relief.

Everett trailed 2-1 early in the second period when it struck three times in eight minutes to take a 4-2 lead. It began just one minute after Moose Jaw had taken the lead. Wharrie jumped into the play from his defensive position and ended up putting in a rebound, tying the game at 4:07 with his first career WHL goal. The Tips then took the lead at 5:55 as Scherbak put a shot through Brayden Low’s screen and past Sawchenko. Everett made it 4-2 at 12:16 as Leedahl finished off a give-and-go with Carson Stadnyk after the Warriors were long-shifted.

The Tips put it away 5:47 into the third when Bauml scored in front after being found by Leedahl. Leedahl finished off the scoring with a late empty-net goal.

Everett had the better scoring chances early in game, with Sawchenko stopping Remi Laurencelle on a two-on-one, and Patrick Bajkov on a short-handed breakaway. Shortly after the short-handed save, Moose Jaw scored. Eberle was able to get the puck over Lotz from in tight, and the power-play goal gave the Warriors a 1-0 lead at 17:34.

The Tips tied the game 50 seconds into the second period just after a power play expired, Betker’s shot deflecting off traffic and in. But Moose Jaw restored its lead less than three minutes later as Howden poked in a rebound, making it 2-1 at 3:07.
