The Silvertips have finally put their long January bus ride behind them. After three-plus weeks that featured one long trip to play the East Division quickly followed by another long trip to Prince George and Kelowna, Everett finally has a moment to catch its breath.
The Tips need it. Illness has been ravaging the team. Several players were sent home before today’s informal practice, and by the time practice ended there were just 14 players still taking part.
One of those 14 players, however, was winger Gunnar Wegleitner. Wegleitner was blown up by a hit from Kelowna’s Josh Morrissey on Friday, then he sat out Saturday’s rematch with the Rockets. His full participation today indicates there were no lasting effects from the hit.
Defenseman Jordan Wharrie was one of the players sent home sick today. Wharrie had to be helped off the ice during last Tuesday’s game at Prince George after suffering a knee-on-knee hit. However, I’m told the knee injury isn’t serious and that he should be back up on his skates before too long, so the Tips caught a break there.
Lastly, there’s still no sign of winger Logan Aasman, who’s been at home recovering from concussion symptoms. There had been no indication of when or whether Aasman would be coming back. However, during the television broadcast of Friday’s game Tips general manager Garry Davidson said it sounded like Aasman might be back on his skates soon. That would be enormously helpful for Everett if Aasman could make it back, considering how thin the roster is at the moment.
Everett is hoping the illness issues will have passed by its next game, when the Tips entertain Vancouver on Friday.
