TACOMA — An explosion and dramatic fire at a south Tacoma auto parts shop prompted fire crews to temporarily evacuate businesses near one of the main gates to Joint Base Lewis-McChord’s McChord Air Field.
The fire sent up a towering cloud of black smoke.
The News Tribune reported that West Pierce Fire and Rescue spokeswoman Jenny Weekes said no one was hurt Thursday afternoon at the Pick N Pull shop.
She says one vendor told fire officials the explosion started in a storage tank. Weekes says he reported he was operating a nearby gas pump when the tank exploded, tossing him into the air. The spokeswoman says medics checked the man, who appeared unhurt.
The fire was reported about 3:30 p.m. and contained by about 5 p.m.
