Carroll would support Sherman if he chose son’s birth over Super Bowl

Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman will become a father soon, which brings up the questions, what happens if his girlfriend, Ashley Moss, goes into labor between now and the Super Bowl?

Sherman addressed that topic Thursday, saying “I’ve thought about the possibility of him coming during the game or coming before the game, and we have things in place in case that happens, and we’ll cross that bridge if we get there,” Sherman said. I’d like to not miss the birth of my first kid, but thankfully and hopefully and god willing, we won’t have to cross that bridge.”

Asked if he has made a decision on what he’ll do should Moss go into labor this weekend, Sherman said he does, but wouldn’t give anything away.

“I do,” he said. “I can’t let you know. I guess we’ll find out if he comes on Sunday, won’t we.”

The good news is there’s a pretty good chance this won’t be an issue. Moss isn’t due until Feb. 12, and in an interview with KING-TV, she said she wouldn’t tell Sherman until after the game if she were to go into labor that day.

But on the off chance the baby came before gameday, and if Sherman decided that was more important to him that playing in the Super Bowl, he would have the full support of his coach.

“Well that’s up to Richard,” Pete Carroll said. “He knows he has an opportunity to face a big decision. Whenever our players have a personal or family issue that comes up, it’s always about family first, and they have to decide what’s best for them, and I support that. So, however he goes with that if he’s faced with that decision, we’ll support him. We’ll see how that goes.”

Carroll also apparently think that baby boy Sherman will be named after him, because he added, “We wish him luck, and I can’t wait to see little Petey.”
