‘Inside the NFL’ goes inside the Super Bowl’s deciding play

If you’re a Seahawks fan, perhaps you’d just as soon forget that Super Bowl XLIX ever happened, but if you’re looking for a little more insight into what occurred in the final moments of the game, the folks at “Inside the NFL” have some good stuff in this clip posted on NFL.com. The full episode, which originally aired on Showtime Tuesday, can be seen on the NFL Network at 9 p.m. Wednesday. A few things that stand out from the clip posted on NFL.com:

—First, it’s worth noting just how good of a play linebacker Dont’a Hightower, who it turns out was playing with a torn Labrum, made to tackle Marshawn Lynch at the 1-yard line. If Hightower doesn’t undercut Lynch with a diving tackle, the Seahawks take the lead one play before Malcolm Butler can become a hero by intercepting Russell Wilson.

—Next up, you’ll notice that as the Patriots are changing personnel, an assistant coach is calling for three cornerbacks on the field, sending Butler onto the field for that final play. That’s right, the player who broke Seattle hearts was on the sideline right before making a Super Bowl clinching interception.

—When Seahawks coach Pete Carroll sees the Patriots changing personnel, he says, “They’re going goal line, they’re going goal line.” This would lead to the decision to throw the pass rather than run the ball. We know how that turned out.

—The excited look transitioning into “Oh no!” for Carroll is a great shot in terms of capturing the emotion, or a painful one depending on your point of view.

—You might notice Marshawn Lynch grinning as he walks off the field, which is a bit odd given the circumstances. Though to be fair, there were other shots showing him looking dejected, and that was about a one-second clip in the video, so it could be misleading.

—When Wilson walks to the sideline, it’s clear he isn’t sure where Butler came from, asking Carroll, “Hey, what happened?”

Carroll responds, “They undercut the route.”
