COUPEVILLE — An Oak Harbor man was in the Island County Jail on Wednesday after detectives found stolen mail in his car.
The suspect, 25, was arrested shortly before 5 p.m. Jan. 28 after Island County sheriff’s deputies received a call about a suspicious vehicle in the area of Green Road in Oak Harbor.
The deputy found the man and saw pieces of mail in his car, according to a sheriff’s office report.
The suspect was arrested for investigation of mail theft and his car was impounded.
After getting a warrant to search the car, detectives found credit cards, checks, driver licenses and pieces of stolen property. They also found federal tax information.
The sheriff’s office is in the process of contacting 69 theft victims from Marysville to Bellingham.
The suspect was booked into the county jail on $100,000 bail. He’s under investigation for multiple counts of mail and identity theft. He also could face burglary and forgery charges.
