SEATTLE — The Seattle Mariners moved to bolster their bench Wednesday by reaching a one-year agreement with veteran second baseman Rickie Weeks, who became a free agent after 11 seasons with the Milwaukee Brewers.
The deal, first reported by Jim Bowden of ESPN.com, is contingent on Weeks, 32, passing a routine physical examination, which is expected to take place within the next few days.
The Mariners, already armed with perennial All-Star Robinson Cano, have little need for a second baseman but appear to view Weeks as a candidate for duty in the outfield and, perhaps, first base.
Weeks agreed to a big-league deal for $2 million that also contains $2 million in potential performance bonuses. He became a free agent Oct. 31 when the Brewers declined his $11.5 million option for 2015.
The Mariners must make a corresponding roster move once the deal becomes official because they currently have no openings on their 40-man roster.
Weeks compiled a .274.357/.452 slash last season with eight homers and 29 RBIs in 252 at-bats over 121 games. He has career slash of .249/.347/.424 in 1,142 career games with 148 homers and 430 RBIs.
