MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — A school bus carrying the King’s High School boys basketball team overturned while exiting I-5 late Saturday.
The bus was carrying 15 students and two coaches from the private Christian school in Shoreline. Eight of the students, one coach and the bus driver, a 53-year-old Everett woman, were taken to area hospitals with minor injures or for observation.
A statement from the school said all the injured were later released without any broken bones or other serious injury.
The bus was returning from a district championship game in Mount Vernon to the King’s campus when the crash occurred.
According to the Washington State Patrol, the bus was headed south on I-5 at about 10:10 p.m. It exited to get on westbound Highway 104, the driver applied the brakes, but they didn’t work.
The bus drifted off the roadway into a ditch, then came back onto the roadway, hit the curb and rolled onto its side.
The bus, a 1999 Bluebird school bus, will be examined by the State Patrol’s Major Accident Team. The school said in its statement it will work with the State Patrol in any way possible to determine the cause.
Alcohol or drugs are not believed to be a factor in the crash.
