Pair of local orchestras put on shows

A children’s concert and a matinee of chamber-style music are offered this weekend by two of Snohomish County’s orchestras.

Cascade Symphony Orchestra’s Children’s Concert begins at 3 p.m. Feb. 21 at the Edmonds Center for the Arts.

Pacifica Chamber Orchestra performs its annual Sunshine Concert at 3 p.m. Feb. 22 at Everett’s First Presbyterian Church.

Cascade’s program includes Poulenc’s “The Story of Babar, the Little Elephant,” narrated by Dave Dolacky.

A highlight will be the third movement of Paganini’s Violin Concerto No. 2, “La Campanella,” performed by 11-year-old violinist Yesong Sophie Lee.

A frequent winner of local competitions, Sophie was invited to participate in the 2014 Yehudi Menuhin International Violin Competition in Austin, Texas. At the age of 8, she performed as soloist with the Seattle Symphony. Sophie has served as concertmaster of Seattle Youth Symphony’s Symphonette, Debut and Junior orchestras.

The CSO percussion ensemble also will perform at the concert.

Children are invited to arrive at 2:15 for the orchestra’s “instrument petting zoo.”

Families are encouraged to bring a nonperishable food item for the Edmonds Food Bank.

Pacifica’s concert includes music by Spanish composer Manuel de Falla, Russian composer Mikhail Glinka and French composer Ernest Chausson.

“Falla’s Concerto for Harpsichord, Flute, Oboe, Clarinet, Violin, and Cello is one of my favorite pieces,” said director Fred Chu. “Because of its unique mix of instruments, listeners can really feel the warmth of sunny Spain.”

The harpsichord played by Elaine Weltz was built by her father Robert A. Yale in 1968 of wood from a Mount Vernon lumber yard.

Also on the program is “Divertimento Brilliante,” which Glinka based on themes from Bellini’s “Opera La Sonnambula.”

Concluding the performance will be Chausson’s Concerto for Violin, Piano, and String Quartet.

“This is one of Chausson’s most loved music because of the color and lyricism,” Chu said. “To me, it’s a diamond of all chamber music repertoires.”
