TACOMA — Members of a Joint Base Lewis-McChord unit that plans missions are preparing to deploy this spring to Afghanistan.
Fewer than 100 soldiers from the 7th Infantry Division headquarters are expected to be based for a year at the Kandahar Air Field.
The News Tribune reports the deployment represents a continuing U.S. presence as the 14-year war winds down.
The Army activated the headquarters unit two years ago at Lewis-McChord to standardized training and operating procedures for six brigades and 15,000 soldiers under its command.
