YAKIMA — If, as the old adage states, defense wins championships, the King’s girls basketball team should be in good shape for Saturday’s Class 1A state title game.
Friday afternoon, the top-ranked Knights smothered their second straight opponent at the Hardwood Classic in the Yakima SunDome, shutting down No. 5 Cashmere 47-33 in a semifinal contest.
King’s limited Cashmere to just two field goals in the first half as the Knights raced to a 23-10 lead. Cashmere shot 7 percent from the field in the first half (2-for-23) and 17 percent for the game (7-for-41). In Thursday’s quarterfinals, King’s held sixth-ranked Granger to just 13-percent shooting from the field in a 40-20 victory.
King’s scored the first 10 points of the contest and led by at least seven the rest of the way.
Anna Parker led King’s with 13 points, Savanna Hanson collected 12 points and 15 rebounds, and Ashley Osborn scored 10 points.
Sydnee Mongeon led Cashmere (21-3) with 11 points.
The Knights (23-3) face No. 3-ranked Lakeside (Nine Mile Falls) in Saturday’s championship game. The tipoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
King’s is in the title game for the second straight season. Last year, the Knight’s lost to Lynden Christian 55-40 in the final.
