With Byron Maxwell headed to Philadelphia and Jeremy Lane recovering from two serious injuries, it’s no secret that the Seahawks are in the market for cornerbacks.
And after signing Will Blackmon earlier Monday, they appear to be adding veteran corner Cary Williams as well.
Williams, who visited the Seahawks last week, chose Seattle over the New York Jets, Tennessee and one of his former teams, the Baltimore Ravens, according to Aaron Wilson of the National Football Post.
Williams, 30, started every game for Philadelphia over the past two season after joining the Eagles as a free agent in 2013. He was released earlier this offseason in a salary cap saving move, a decision that, as it turned out, helped the Eagles replace him with Maxwell.
Blackmon was a victim of the Seahawks’ incredible cornerback depth in 2013, and as a result was cut at the end of training camp. Now the 30-year-old Blackmon has re-signed with Seattle to bolster depth at the position.
Blackmon, who spent the past two seasons in Jacksonville, appearing in 23 games, starting 12, was released by the Jaguars last month.
Bringing him back makes a lot of sense for Seattle, which is expected to lose Maxwell to Philadelphia as soon as free agents can officially sign with new teams on Tuesday, and which could be without Lane for some or all of the 2015 season, the result of a broken arm and torn ACL he sustained in the Super Bowl.
The 6-foot, 204-pound Blackmon was drafted by Green Bay in the fourth-round of the 2006 draft, so Seahawks general manager John Schneider has a background him going back to their time together with the Packers.
Blackmon also has experience as a returner, which could prove useful for a team that never settled on permanent return solutions last year.
The Seahawks also re-signed linebacker Mike Morgan, who was a restricted free agent. Morgan, who played for Pete Carroll at USC, signed with Seattle as an undrafted free agent in 2011, and has appeared in 53 games, starting one, and has been a key contributor on special teams during his time in Seattle.
The Seahawks also confirmed the signing of tight end Anthony McCoy, which was first reported over the weekend. McCoy, a sixth-round pick in 2010, appeared in 34 games with Seattle, starting 14, but then missed each of the past two seasons with Achilles injuries. He has 31 career receptions for 437 yards and three touchdowns.
The Seahawks also announced they tendered qualifying contracts to exclusive-rights free-agent wide receiver Ricardo Lockette and exclusive-rights free-agent defensive back DeShawn Shead.
The Seahawks did not tender a contract to wide receiver and punt returner Bryan Walters, making him unrestricted free agent Tuesday.
Also on Tuesday night, there were reports free-agent guard James Carpenter, a former first-round draft pick of the Seahawks, will sign with the New York Jets.
