I continually read and hear how the current administration has had the U.S. economy in “recovery” for years. Reading The Herald, and looking around the Everett and Marysville areas make me think that this type of recovery will lead to a depression. In The Herald on Feb. 7, an article headlined “Employers add 295,000 jobs” sounds great until you remember the that the Feb. 6 Herald had an article that reported 320,000 new jobless claims. Higher jobless claims than new jobs created doesn’t sound like a growing economy to me. The Feb. 6 article was headlined, “Jobless claims unexpectedly move higher.”
When you wonder about the effect of these two articles, let your observations help you decide. As you go about your business, pay attention to a couple of indicators. See which sign you observe more often: “For sale or lease” on empty stores, office buildings and factories, or “Help wanted” on the same types of buildings?
If you still come to the conclusion that the economy is growing, take a look at another indicator. The federal government publishes a ton of statistics. Look up the statistics concerning the percentage of the total population that is employed. That should open your eyes even more.
