SNOHOMISH — There will be sombreros, folk dancing and prancing horses downtown.
The city plans to celebrate its first ever Cinco de Mayo event.
The Snohomish City Council last week unanimously approved sponsoring a Cinco de Mayo Fiesta this year.
This event is scheduled at 1 p.m. May 7, in the Carnegie parking area and Cedar Avenue, between First and Pearl streets. Cinco de Mayo — May 5 — is on a Thursday this year. The Snohomish fiesta will be held on a Saturday.
The event is being organized by a community committee from the St. Michael’s Church, located at 1512 Pine Avenue. The committee is not a nonprofit group and cannot afford to pay the insurance premium.
To help them, the council agreed to sponsor the event for one year. This will make the event covered under the city’s insurance.
The event will not cost the city anything, manager Larry Bauman said.
There are an estimated 1,000 Hispanics living in Snohomish according to Census figures. This represents 11 percent of the total population of 8,905, making them the largest minority in the city.
Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican national holiday. It commemorates Mexico’s victory over the French forces of Napoleon III on May 5, 1862, in the state of Puebla.
The event is significant because France was considered to have the strongest military in the world at the time.
