Boys lacrosse: Monroe 7, Shorecrest 5

MONROE — Cole Monpas scored late in the first quarter to give Monroe the early lead on the way to a 7 — 5 boys high school lacrosse win over Shorecrest to open its season Monday at Monroe High School.

It was the only goal of the night for the sophomore attackman who beat Shorecrest goaltender Bennett Joyal on a play from the “X” with 1:57 to go in the opening quarter. Monpas was one four Bearcats to score in the contest.

After taking a 4 — 1 lead at the half, Monroe’s defense kicked in down the stretch to give the Bearcats their first win since their only victory of 2014, a 11 — 9 defeat of Burlington-Edison on April 17 of last season.

In the second half, while Shorecrest was able to match Monore’s two third-quarter goals while adding two more in the fourth, they were never able to overcome a combined the defensive effort of 15 ground balls from senior defender Cory Brown and sophomore midfielder Jakob Vandeventer. Junior goaltender Loren Hartzell had a strong night in the cage with 17 saves including eight in the second half.

Vandeventer, junior Riley Sachs and sophomore Johnny Adams each had a pair of goals to round out the scoring for the Bearcats.

Shorecrest was led by Simon Acker and Briggan Weaver with a pair of goals, while Bennett Joyal had seven saves.

Monroe (1-0-0) plays Stanwood (0-0-0), at 5 p.m. Thursday at Stanwood Middle School. Shorecrest (0-1-0) plays Kamiak (0-0-0), at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Kamiak High School in Mukilteo.
