I was part way through reading my morning Herald when it suddenly occurred to me what how very taken we Homo Sapiens are with our importance. I mean, here we are a mere 4.5 billion years or so into our planet’s lifespan with a whopping 7.5 billion or so to go. Judging by biological history, that means that we will be long gone, as a species, through evolution long before the whole party is over and we seem to have decided to use every tool at our command to put the kibosh on that parade by ending it all now while we are still the leading float.
We have this planet that is so fantastically put together that there don’t seem to be any like it for many light years and are going to ruin it before it is half-way done because it so very important how other people worship their gods, how much excess of the stuff of life we can hoard, hog, claim and waste, and that we establish our ownership by codifying a right to heedlessly abuse, plunder and defile it in the name of freedom.
Of course there is life on other planets. Are they going to make contact? Why would they ever do something that foolish? Besides, they’re busy. They have their hands full making sure we never get loose.
