MARYSVILLE — The Marysville School District is getting a federal grant to help pay staffing costs from the Oct. 24 shooting at Marysville Pilchuck High School.
U.S. Sens. Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell and Reps. Rick Larsen and Suzan DelBene announced that the school district will be receiving a $50,000 grant in the next few days. The money comes from a Department of Education program that provides money to help schools recover from traumatic events.
The grant will help reimburse the school district for overtime and substitutes who filled in for traumatized teachers. It will also help repay transportation costs, as extra money was needed to make sure students could get to school.
Fifteen-year-old Jaylen Fryberg shot and killed four friends and wounded another after inviting them to lunch in the cafeteria at Marysville Pilchuck. He also killed himself.
