With regard to a letter writer’s concern about the state of our dear planet. I can assure him that the planet can look after itself. We may, indeed, trash it and exhaust its resources to the extent that it will become uninhabitable for humans, but eventually an adjustment will occur that will wipe the slate clean. Over the last several hundred millions of years, at least four major catastrophic events took place that not only changed the physical state of the planet but also destroyed almost every living thing. The last of these occurred 65 million years ago and wiped out the dinosaurs and most of other life as well; fauna and flora. The planet was reset to square one and it took 12 million years for life as we know it to re-establish itself.
Eventually another such catastrophe is bound to occur and all signs of man’s feeble existence will disappear; roads, railways, airports, cities, music and the arts. Then perhaps, after a suitable period of peace and quiet, another human type will emerge that will be more constrained and less greedy than we are (hopefully). So have no fear for the planet only our continued ability to survive on it.
