After being named the Most Valuable Player at the Cal State Stanislaus Invitational, pitcher-infielder Sam Munger of Saint Martin’s University was honored by the Great Northwest Athletic Conference as its Softball Player of the Week for March 23-29.
Munger, a graduate of Cascade High School, led the Saints to a 6-1 record in the 24-team tournament held March 27-29.
At the plate she hit .583 (14-for-24) with two home runs. She drove in eight runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth inning in a 2-1 win over Azusa Pacific.
On the mound, Munger collected three wins and posted a 0.83 ERA. She allowed just four runs and 22 hits in 25? innings.
“Sam had a great weekend leading the team by example,” Saint Martin’s head coach Rick Noren said in a press release. “She made great decisions at the plate and (battled) hard on the mound and in the field. It was a lot of games in the heat and she did a great job playing at a high level the entire tournament.”
This is the third time the conference has honored Munger as player of the week this season.
Junior Silvertips win state title
The Everett Youth Hockey Bantam Junior Silvertips won the Washington State Pacific Northwest Amateur Hockey Association Bantam B State Tournament.
The tournament was held March 20-22 in Kirkland.
The Junior Silvertips defeated the Tri-Cities Junior Americans 3-2 in overtime in the championship game.
Nikolai Gusinsky of Lake Stevens scored the decisive goal in overtime to give Everett Youth Hockey the title.
Other members of the team included Jeffrey Andrews (Arlington), Josh Aylett (Seattle), Evan Bodenstab (Everett), Henry Colvin (Snohomish), Cameron Ford (Lake Stevens), Luke Frost (Lake Stevens), Jeffrey Garber (Stanwood), Konner Greene (Lake Stevens), Liam Myers (Marysville), Bryce Peters (Lake Forest Park), Garret Powers (Mill Creek), Jettson Smutek (Everett), Trevor Sortland (Brier), Austin Whitely (Bothell), Isaac Wilkie (Edmonds), Nicholas Woodard (Snohomish) and Zach Zielinski (Lake Stevens).
The team was coached by Michael Devellano. He was assisted by Michael Andrews and strength and conditioning coach Bob Hamre.
