Boeing tops Airbus in first quarter

The Boeing Co. beat its European rival, Airbus Group NV, for airplane orders and deliveries in the first quarter of 2015, according to figures from the two airplane makers.

Boeing delivered 184 airplanes, compared to Airbus’ 134 deliveries. In terms of the raw numbers, Boeing accounted for 58 percent of production from January through March.

Single-aisle airplanes made up the bulk of those deliveries. Boeing delivered 121 737s, while Airbus delivered 109.

Airbus produced 25 twin-aisle airliners compared to Boeing’s 63. Airbus delivered 20 A330s, 1 A350 and 4 A380s.

Boeing delivered 30 787s, 24 777s, 5 767s and 4 747s.

As is typical, orders were a bit slow to start the year. Boeing also won the orders race. It received 116 orders. After cancellations and conversions, it had 110 net orders.

Airbus had 121 orders, but after cancellations and conversions, it ended with 101 net orders.

Most of the orders between the two companies were for single-aisle airplanes. Boeing had 66 net orders for 737s, and Airbus had 67 orders for its A320 family.

Boeing had 44 orders for twin-aisle jetliners: 34 787s, 7 777s and 3 747s.

Airbus had 34 orders, all for its A330. Most of Airbus’ widebody orders came in March from Air Lease Corp., which closed a deal for 55 airplanes including 25 A330s.
