Sometimes all you have to do is ask.
Andreas Tsircou lives in the neighborhood of 112th Street SE and Seventh Avenue SE in Everett. “I have been dealing with an inconvenience with that intersection,” Tsircou wrote.
There is no right-turn arrow on the traffic signal for drivers on westbound 112th Street wanting to turn north on Seventh Avenue, even though there is no oncoming traffic to deal with because it’s a T-intersection. Instead, while traffic is turning from Seventh Avenue to 112th Street, the light remains red. Sure, you can come to a full stop and then turn. But…
“It would be a perfect time to have a right-turn arrow,” Tsircou said. “Are there any plans for the city of Everett to add a turn signal to that intersection?”
There are now.
City traffic engineer Timothy Miller said Everett makes decisions on where to install right-turn signals where two conditions are met: dedicated right-turn lanes exist, and there are sufficient right-turning volumes.
“At the intersection of 112th and Seventh, both conditions are met. We anticipate adding a westbound right-turn signal indication within a year,” Miller said.
Public Works spokesperson Marla Carter gave Tsircou kudos for bringing the opportunity to the city’s attention. “We appreciate ideas and questions from the public, especially when it highlights a need that we can address,” Carter said.
“Wow,” Tsircou said, “maybe I should ask for more?”
