SEATTLE — Snohomish girls lacrosse coach Christine Ryan said her team played one of its best halves of the season in the second half of Tuesday’s game against Lakeside.
The first half, however, left a little something to be desired.
Before Snohomish even got on the scoreboard, Lakeside had built an 8-0 lead and led 10-2 at halftime. Snohomish outscored Lakeside 7-4 after halftime, but the deficit was too large to overcome in a 14-9 loss.
“We couldn’t win the draw and when we can’t win the draw things tend to go bad for us,” first-year head coach Ryan said of the first half. “When we did get it down on attack we just went straight from getting the ball down there to stopping everything. We weren’t moving the ball around and we weren’t moving people around. When we do that, we’re easy to defend. Anybody is easy to defend when they do that.”
With the win in the final regular-season game of the year for both teams, Lakeside clinches the No. 2 seed going into the postseason from the North Sound division. Snohomish qualifies for the postseason with the No. 3 seed. Lakeside’s lone league loss came to Roosevelt, while Snohomish lost league games to both Roosevelt and Lakeside.
Lakeside controlled possession for most of the first half, but when Snohomish did have possession it was unable to capitalize. Trailing 5-0, Snohomish had the ball on Lakeside’s side of the field for the better part of five minutes, but came up empty-handed.
And when Lakeside finally got the ball back, it added three more goals within a span of less than four minutes.
“We won the draws and we didn’t have a lot of turnovers so we were able to execute on attack pretty well,” Lakeside head coach Jamie Asaka said. “We had the most possession time and controlled the tempo.”
Snohomish’s Hannah Graves finally got her team on the scoreboard with 6:19 to play in the first half, cutting the deficit to 8-1. Lakeside answered the goal with two of its own to push the lead up to 10-1. Snohomish’s Helen Bouchard scored as time expired in the first half to make the halftime score 10-2.
Bouchard’s late goal seemed to ignite her teammates early in the second half as Snohomish scored the first four goals to cut the deficit to 10-6.
Snohomish’s run was aided when Lakeside’s senior captain Lindsey Call was called for her second yellow card of the game, which by rule results in a red card and the player is unable to return to the game.
“I think we were emotionally a little rattled by that,” Asaka said. “We had to make some adjustments on the draw and I think once the girls kind of figured out that Lindsey isn’t going to be here and they had to step up, they did.”
Snohomish scored seven of the first eight goals in the second half to get as close as 11-8 with 11:08 to play in the game.
“When we finally started getting the ball in the net it helped out,” Ryan said. “The second half was probably the best half we’ve played all season just in terms of really digging deep and actually fighting back.”
Snohomish relies on Graves for much of its offense, but Lakeside held her to just two goals for the game.
“They were face-guarding our best player, Hannah Graves,” Ryan said. “We haven’t really seen that done successfully. We’ve seen it attempted, but not done successfully all season. When they were able to do it successfully I think it kind of threw the girls for a loop a little bit.”
After Snohomish got within three, Lakeside put the game away with three straight unassisted goals by Amanda Roper.
“She actually came off the field for a little 30-second get-my-head-in-the-game kind of moment,” Asaka said. “I said, ‘look Amanda, Lindsey is out and you’ve got to collect yourself and put the team on your shoulders.’ And she just did — it was awesome.”
Roper finished the game with five goals and one assist.
