MONROE — Snohomish freshman Bailey Greenlee and junior Alyssa Simons combined to throw a two-hitter on Tuesday, shutting out Monroe 3-0 in the semifinals of the 4A District 1 Tournament.
The Panthers earned a spot in the championship game for a second consecutive season and will play Jackson on Thursday in the championship game.
Unlike years past, a spot in the district championship doesn’t guarantee a trip to the state tournament. The loser of Thursday’s championship will play on Friday in a loser-out/winner-to-state game, something Snohomish coach Lou Kennedy said his team is well aware of.
“They’re well aware of what is going on,” Kennedy said. “I think they’re more concerned with not having to play on Friday so they don’t miss prom. Prom is Friday night and if we have a 4 o’clock game on Friday night for the number two spot, it’s not going to go over well.”
It won’t be easy for the Panthers. Though they are 2-0 against the Timberwolves this season, both games have been decided by just one run.
Snohomish scored one run in the first inning and two runs in the fifth inning against the Bearcats, which was more the enough for Greenlee and Simons, who were in control from the pitcher’s circle.
“They pitched very well,” Kennedy said. “They got behind on a couple of batters, but every time they did they just came roaring back and threw strikes.”
