SEDRO-WOOLLEY — South Whidbey locked up its spot as the third seed from its district to the state tournament with a walk-off single against Nooksack Valley in the winner-to-state game of the 1A District Softball tournament Saturday.
With runners at second and third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Falcons catcher Anne Madsen hit an infield single over the pitchers head to win the game.
“(It was) pretty exciting because it meant that we go to state,” South Whidbey head coach Tim Collins said. “It was great for the kids. I don’t think South Whidbey has been to state in a long time.”
Falcons starter Mackenzee Collins pitched a complete game, striking out eight and allowing two unearned runs and pitched out of bases-loaded jams in both the fouth and fifth innings.
“She worked hard,” Collins said. “She’s not the fastest pitcher but she puts the ball where we want it.”
