EVERETT — The Coats and the Main Attraction, two of the state’s top a cappella vocal bands, will perform together May 30 in a special concert at the Historic Everett Theatre.
The groups don’t often appear together. High school jazz choirs in the region are encouraged to attend.
The Coats, which tours nationally, is generally considered the Northwest’s premiere a cappella vocal band with a comedy twist. The Coats have performed for numerous benefit concerts, fairs, festivals high schools and colleges and have shared the stage with the likes of Gallagher, the Beach Boys, Trisha Yearwood and Eddie Money. The Main Attraction has an equally interesting background, having evolved from a group singing a cappella on street corners in Seattle’s Pioneer Square to an act that has opened shows for Smokey Robinson, the Four Tops, Eddie Murphy, Helen Reddy, Natalie Cole and the late great BB King.
A cappella music has been part of the American music scene for more than 100 years.
Performed without instrumental accompaniment, a cappella popularity moved from churches and universities early on to community groups such as barbershop quartets and doo-wop bands in mid-century.
A cappella music has become popular again in university settings and with the TV show “The Sing-Off,” the musical “Perfect Harmony” and the comedy films “Pitch Perfect” and “Pitch Perfect 2.”
Today, some groups use their voices to emulate musical instruments and others focus on traditional harmonizing.
