For those of you hanging on every twist in the Auston Matthews saga, here’s another one. Reports came out Tuesday that immigration issues are delaying Matthews’ signing with ZSC Lions in Switzerland. It seems a foreigner must have one year of professional experience in order to qualify for a work permit to play in Switzerland, and Matthews doesn’t have that. Gregg Drinnan has a good overview of the situation on his blog.
If Matthews, who’s projected as the first-overall pick in the 2016 NHL draft, is unable to obtain a work permit in Switzerland, one has to believe Everett’s chances at landing him spike. But we’ve seen this recruiting story take all kinds of unexpected turns, so I’d caution any Silvertips fans from getting too optimistic about this latest news.
The other bit of news I wanted to share today is that former Everett sniper Tyler Maxwell is back in town this week to conduct his annual Maxwell Hockey Camp. The camp takes place Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Lynnwood Ice Center and Olympic View Arena. Maxwell and former Everett teammate Kellan Tochkin are the instructors. Maxwell is also holding separate power skating and development sessions through next Tuesday.
The camp is still taking registrations for players. More information can be found at the Maxwell Hockey Camp website.
