TACOMA — The U.S. Coast Guard says crews have suspended searching for a man who went into the water after two boats collided on Commencement Bay late Saturday.
Petty Officer 1st Class George Degener said the search was suspended at 1 p.m. Sunday after a search that covered 35 square miles over more than 14 hours.
Two people were taken to the hospital with serious injuries from the collision.
Degener says authorities believe alcohol contributed to the crash, which happened at about 11 p.m. near Point Defiance Park in Tacoma.
One boat carrying four people capsized and everyone aboard went into the water. Pierce County marine crews rescued three people from that vessel, but a man remained missing. Degener says Tacoma police also arrested the boat’s male operator.
That boat collided with another vessel carrying two people. Those two were taken to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
