Bearcats with ‘Heart’

Three Monroe High School graduating seniors — Cody Hanford, Sarah Amador and Cassandra Engvall — received the 2015 Joe Delp “Heart of the Bearcat” Award.

Named for the school’s mascot and much-loved former assistant principal Joe Delp (who now serves as an assistant principal at Hidden River Middle School), the award celebrates students who exemplify the meaning of the community MHS tries to instill in its students. “These students are kind to all the students, no matter their age, grade, or color,” Principal John Lombardi said.

In the WPA awards, Henry Yarsinske Jr., former editor-in-chief of The Clipper, earned a pair of first place awards for government and political reporting and arts and entertainment commentary. Savannah Perkins, The Clipper’s editor-in-chief for 2014-15, earned two first place honors for her coverage of the Marysville Pilchuck High School shootings and an honorable mention in sports news.

Other WPA winners were Meagan Baron, Sapphire Chan, Stephanie Davey, Taylor Drake, Levi Jucahu, Chris Kim, Geoffrey Lewis, Nathaniel Lynch, Bob Neary, Jake Nicholls, Felim So, Isabella Tate, Sam Tilford and Tanner Tokarsyck.

In the PNAJE awards, Neary, Perkins and Tilford all took home honors for photography, while EverettClipper.com earned a second-place nod for best student-news website in the region.

VFW honors grads with Rock Roth awards

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8870 in Edmonds on June 16 presented $1,000 Rock Roth Freedom Scholarships to four graduating seniors in the Edmonds and Mukilteo school districts: Jessica Nguyen (Lynnwood High School, Daniil Oliferovskiy (Mountlake Terrace), Helen Anderson (Kamiak) and Grace Wainaina (Mariner).

The awards were based on academic achievement, leadership, community service and an essay that “explained the meaning of freedom to them and how our Constitution establishes and maintains a culture of freedom in our country.”

Local grads stand out at UW Bothell

Two of the three outstanding students honored at the University of Washington Bothell commencement ceremony June 14 are from Snohomish County.

Alexander Gaston was the recipient of the 2015 President’s Medal, which recognizes the graduating senior with the most distinguished academic record and demonstrated achievements and success.

Gaston, born and raised in Everett, graduated Summa Cum Laude with a 3.99 GPA and a degree in business administration. Gaston was homeschooled until high school, then took online courses and attended Everett Community College as a Running Start student.

Christian Arciniega, who graduated from Monroe High School, graduated Magna Cum Laude following a 20-year journey that included numerous starts and stops due to financial difficulties.

Arciniega’s husband gave her his veterans education benefits so she could return to college. She balanced her studies with being a mother of two and manager of the household while her husband was deployed abroad. In that time, she revived the Husky Herald student newspaper and wrote legislation giving priority registration for military spouses and domestic partners receiving VA education benefits. House Bill 1052 was signed into law earlier this year.

Financial literacy highlighted at Jackson

The results of the January 2015 Washington Finance financial literacy contest were recently announced. Over 400 students participated in the online competition. Placing in the top 10 percent were Tyler Jones, Blakely Chong and Hunter White from Rose Smith’s class at Henry M. Jackson High School in Mill Creek.
