The Shindig is going down here this weekend.
This town of just under 5,000 people is expected to host at least 20,000 visitors this weekend for the annual festival that celebrates the Skykomish Valley’s rich logging history. The Sultan Shindig kicks off with a carnival, talent show, live music and street fair on Friday. The festivities continues through Sunday.
“It’s a real big deal,” said Debbie Copple, director of the Sky Valley Chamber of Commerce. “It’s a reunion we want to share with old and new people.”
George Anderson Sr., of Duvall, has been voted this year’s logging grand marshal. He was a logger and a log truck driver for much of his career.
Anderson, 75, said he’s never been to the Shindig before but he got to know many folks in Sultan’s logging industry over the years.
“I tell people I’m allowed two hours of bs time a day and that’s usually gone by about 10 o’clock in the morning,” he said.
Copple said logging is about more than cutting the trees. Anderson is being recognized for his work getting timber to market, she said.
State Sen. Kirk Pearson is also being honored as the grand marshal of the parade, which is set to roll down Main Street at 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
Following Saturday’s parade is a motorcycle show, a logging contest and more live music. The festival continues Sunday with a pancake breakfast and community church service. Entertainment follows with a car show, the logging finals, and karaoke.
