In a season that culminated with a Class 3A state championship, Mikayla Pivec of Lynnwood emerged as one of the top high school basketball players in the state.
Pivec, a junior, put together a 2014-15 season that would lead to her being named the Gatorade Washington Girls Basketball Player of the Year. It also resulted in her leading the Royals to a state crown with a 31-point, 17-rebound effort in a 54-42 victory over Cleveland in the title game.
For the season, Pivec averaged 20.4 points, 12.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 3.5 steals per game.
For her accomplishments in basketball, Pivec was a finalist for The Herald’s Woman of the Year in Sports award.
In a recent interview, Lynnwood coach Everett Edwards described Pivec as a player who has “worked tremendously hard to be the best. To be consistent all year long. She’s been playing this way since her freshman year in terms of her effort and her ability to impact the game in a number of different ways.”
Because she just completed her junior year at Lynnwood, Pivec can look forward to a final season with the Royals in 2015-16. After graduation she expects to play college basketball, and she is being recruited by a number of NCAA Division 1 programs.
