SEATTLE — A Washington state Transportation Department spokeswoman says Navy helicopters continued the search Monday evening for a light plane carrying three people that crashed in north-central Washington. A teenage girl survived the weekend crash and walked out to find help. The fate of her two step-grandparents, who were also on board, remains unclear.
Transportation spokeswoman Barbara LaBoe says search planes have concluded their flights for the day. She says fixed wing plane searches will resume Tuesday if necessary, as weather conditions allow.
The Beech A-35 failed to complete its flight from Kalispell, Montana, to Lynden, Washington, on Saturday afternoon. Despite a search based on cellphone data and typical flight patterns, there was no sign of the aircraft or its occupants until 16-year-old Autumn Veatch followed a trail to a highway near the east entrance to North Cascades National Park. A motorist drove her to safety Monday.
Also aboard the plane were Leland and Sharon Bowman of Marion, Montana.
