I’m back for a few days, so here’s a collection of Silvertips news that happened while I was gone the past couple weeks:
– The Montreal Canadiens wasted little time in inking Tips defenseman Noah Juulsen to an entry-level contract. Montreal selected the 18-year-old Juulsen in the first round (26th overall) of this year’s NHL draft. The signing came less than two weeks after the Canadiens drafted Juulsen, so clearly Montreal likes what they have in the Abbotsford, B.C., native.
– NHL development camps took place the past two weeks, and one Silvertip who attended camp I didn’t mention previously was winger Carson Stadnyk, who went to camp with the St. Louis Blues. Stadnyk joined goaltender Austin Lotz (Buffalo), defenseman Tristen Pfeifer (Arizona) and defenseman Kevin Davis (Edmonton) as non-drafted Tips who were invited to development camps.
– The Tips announced Tuesday the signing of general manager Garry Davidson to a five-year contract extension. The extension leaves Davidson in charge through the 2019-20 season. When Davidson inherited the team from Doug Soetaert in February of 2012, the Tips were an eighth-place team in the 10-team Western Conference. In Davidson’s first three full seasons in charge Everett has gone from eighth in the conference, to tied for fourth, to second, including a U.S. Division championship.
– In talking to Silvertips president Gary Gelinas about Davidson’s extension, Gelinas wanted to clear some things up with regards to Auston Matthews (see the link to the Davidson story), saying Matthews was basically committed to Everett prior to the U-18 World Championships in April in Switzerland. Essentially, Matthews played so well at the U-18s that he attracted the attention of the pro teams. So according to Gelinas, Matthews’ interest in playing in Europe has nothing to do with trying to avoid Everett, as has been suggested in some places.
