Tips to keep your pet hydrated

As we’re in the midst of one of the Pacific Northwest’s hottest, driest summers, it’s important for us to remember to stay hydrated. This goes for our furry family members as well. Of course, pet hydration is important year-round, but in the summer months when factors such as heat and lots of outside play mix together, it becomes a priority. Here are a few tips to keep in mind during these hot months to ensure a happy, healthy summer for you and your pet.

  • Be aware of the outside temperature before you take your pet on a walk. Not only could the sidewalk potentially burn your dog’s paws, but the heat will also dehydrate them more quickly. Walk your dog early in the morning or wait until it gets later, and cooler, in the day to take your pet walking. Even then, it’s not a bad idea to bring along a collapsible water bowl for the journey. Most pet stores have a great selection of portable water dishes to choose from.
  • If your pet is dehydrated as the result of fluids lost during sickness, there are still some things you can do to ease their discomfort. Mixing small amounts of wet food in with the dry food will give your pet a little extra hydration boost. Ice chips are sometimes recommended as well when it comes to sickness. Sometimes dogs, in-particular, can tolerate that better than plain water. If you are just wrapping up an intense game of fetch with Fido, wait a few minutes until their breathing has calmed and panting has subsided. Swallowing too much water in too short amount of time may cause discomfort, and possibly even injury.
  • If you decide to take a road trip, be sure to bring a couple jugs of fresh water for your pal to drink from. In the case that wherever you’re going doesn’t have access to fresh water, or you need to make an unexpected pit stop, you’ll have the water at your fingertips.
  • The simplest of all, make sure that your four-legged friend has a water bowl that is always full through the duration of the day. It never hurts to place several water sources throughout your house. Those with a weighted underside are the best option, which will ensure that your pet won’t knock it over.
  • As always, call your vet immediately if you’re concerned about your dog’s comfort and health.

Following these tips will put you, and your furry pal, on the right track to enjoying a fun and hydrated summer.
