SALEM, Ore. — A group seeking to raise Oregon’s minimum wage to $15 an hour says it has collected enough valid signatures to qualify for a ballot title.
The group 15 Now submitted 2,000 signatures to the secretary of state’s office at the end of June. It said Friday that 1,800 were deemed valid.
The group needed at least 1,000 valid signatures from registered voters to start collecting the rest of the 88,000 they’ll need to get the measure on the 2016 ballot.
Supporters of the $15 minimum wage have said they’re going to the ballot box because state lawmakers failed to act during the recently concluded legislative session.
Opponents worry hiking the minimum wage to $15 would put a strain on business and make it harder for them to hire.
