LAKEWOOD — Two Lakewood police officers were found to have been justified in fatally shooting a man in a lumberyard in April.
The News Tribune of Tacoma reported that the death of 37-year-old Daniel Isaac Covarrubias was ruled a justifiable homicide by Pierce County Prosecutor Mark Lundquist Tuesday.
Officers David Butts and Ryan Hamilton shot and killed Covarrubias April 21 when they were called to a lumber yard about a suspicious person.
Prosecutors say they found Covarrubias on top of a pile of lumber and told him a ladder was coming for him to climb down. Covarrubias did not respond and instead reached into his pocket and took out a cellphone which he then pointed at officers. Butts and Hamilton fire, hitting Covarrubias several times. He died later at a hospital.
