EVERETT – The Everett AquaSox wasted no time getting their offense going as the second half of the Northwest League season got underway Monday night.
Luis Liberato highlighted a four-run first inning for the AquaSox with a two-run triple as the Frogs led almost the entire way in a 6-0 win over Vancouver at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Corey Simpson added to Everett’s total in the first with an RBI single and Ryan Uhl added a sacrifice fly as the AquaSox built up the early lead.
It was the Frogs’ first victory against Vancouver this season. The Canadians swept Everett earlier in the year and were 4-0 against the AquaSox prior to Monday’s game.
A day after scoring just two runs on 15 hits, the Frogs had better luck plating runs on Monday. The AquaSox tallied six runs on 10 hits. Jordan Cowan hit a bases-loaded infield single in the third and Simpson crushed a pitch from Vancouver pitcher Josh DeGraaf over the center field fence in the fifth to wrap up the scoring for the Everett, which won the game in a prompt two hours and 10 minutes.
Erick Mejia and Simpson each batted 2-for-4 with two runs scored for Everett and Johan Quevedo (2-for-4) also added a pair of hits and a run scored for the AquaSox (1-0 second half, 23-16 overall).
Everett starter Jose Santiago (1-2) earned his first win of the season with six strikeouts in six shutout innings. Dylan Silva pitched the final three innings to earn his first save of the season.
Jackson honored
Everett infielder Drew Jackson was named the Northwest League Player of the Week for the week ending on July 26. Jackson batted .577 in seven games with two doubles, a home run, eight runs scored, five stolen bases and two RBI. Jackson, a fifth-round pick by the Mariners in 2015, leads the AquaSox with a .360 batting average and 30 runs scored. He also leads the Northwest League with 21 stolen bases.
For the kids
Tuesday’s AquaSox game has a special 11:05 a.m. start time because of Kids Day festivities at Everett Memorial Stadium. The game, which will feature several community youth groups in attendance, is the Frogs’ last home game until a three-game series with Tri-City that begins on August 6.
