SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — South Snohomish Little League’s ace pitcher, Makayla Miller, was sick in bed all of Monday, making her performance Tuesday all the more remarkable.
Makayla allowed three runs on eight hits but it was enough as Washington’s 11- and 12-year-old softball champions defeated Sunnyside Little League out of Tucson, Arizona, 6-3, for their third straight victory at the West Region tournament
“She had a 103-degree temperature yesterday (so) we weren’t sure if she was going to play,” South Snohomish manager Fred Miller said.
Makayla was perfect through two innings but ran into some trouble as she fatigued, giving up hits to start the third, fifth and sixth innings that all led to runs.
“I don’t think I was that good today because I felt really slow,” Makayla said. “I was sick yesterday, and that scared me, but I really wanted to pitch so I took medicine and I was OK, not good, but I was OK to pitch.”
She totaled six strikeouts for Washington, which plays its final Pool A game against Clackamas, Oregon, at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
“I’m just going to relax the rest of (Tuesday), probably sleep,” Makayla said. “I think once I rest, I’ll be up to my full potential tomorrow.”
Makayla and Brooke Jordan each had two hits and drove in a run for South Snohomish. Katilana Jameson had a hit and drove in two runs for the Washington state champs, who are 3-0 in pool play.
The top two teams in each pool advance to the semifinals, which are scheduled for Thursday. The championship game is Friday, with the winner advancing to the Little League Softball World Series.
