Rock the Boat brings Mudhoney, beer and more to Everett Saturday

Take a moment and imagine this: Four incredible rock bands, including a legendary grunge act, 10 delicious local beers on tap, food trucks, a stage built right on the waterfront and sunny weather in the high 80s.

Sounds like a dream, right?

Well, dreams come true in Everett this weekend.

The Everett Music Initiative and Scuttlebutt Brewing are teaming up to present Rock The Boat, a beer and music festival Aug. 1 on the waterfront at the Port of Everett.

The inaugural event will take place on the waterfront at Box Car Park, which is located on the waterfront west of Scuttlebutt’s restaurant. Seattle grunge trailblazers Mudhoney headline the festival, with a strong supporting act that includes Everett band Fauna Shade and Seattle rock bands My Goodness and Duke Evers.

This event is a big deal for the city of Everett. Mudhoney, a household name in the Northwest for close to 30 years, has somehow never performed in their hometown’s neighbor to the north.

It is also a great opportunity for a local band on the rise like Fauna Shade, which gets to perform with a band they’ve been looking up to for years.

“My first real concert was Mudhoney — I don’t count that Pussycat Dolls show,” said Everett native and Fauna Shade front man Scotty Smith. “A fifteen-year-old Scotty would never believe that one day we’d be sharing the same stage.”

You see? Dreams coming true.

In addition to Mudhoney and Fauna Shade, bluesy rock duos My Goodness and Duke Evers, two of the most exciting bands in Seattle right now, are also not to be missed.

The Everett Music Initiative and Scuttlebutt Brewing present the inaugural Rock the Boat music festival at 4 p.m. Aug. 1 on the Everett Waterfront. The bands Mudhoney, My Goodness, Fauna Shade and Duke Evers will play the one-day festival. Music begins at 6 p.m. The beer garden will offer 10 different Scuttlebutt beers in 6- and 12-ounce pours. There will be an all-ages area, with food trucks and root beer on tap.

The beer

Here’s a look at some of the hard-to-find beers Scuttlebutt will be pouring at the Rock the Boat event with comments from Scuttlebutt head brewer Matt Stromberg:

Cinco Piratas Red Lager, 5 percent, 44 IBU

This hop forward lager isn’t overly aggressive. Think of a classic west coast pale ale combined with the soft notes of a German-style lager.

Saison, 4.8 percent, 17 IBU

This Belgian farmhouse ale utilizes the same recipe as the Homeport Blonde but employs a Belgian farmhouse yeast.

Jarrett’s Folly Barrel-aged Cascadia Dark Ale, 8.5 percent, 65 IBU

Hoppy but with a malt backbone, this offshoot of Scuttlebutt’s Darktopia, a black IPA, was aged in barrels and has a nice oaky flavor.

Bierre de Garde, 5.2 percent, 36 IBU

Similar to an amber ale but fermented with the same farmhouse yeast used in the Saison. Spicy floral notes complement the caramel flavors present from the crystal malt.

Nocino Walnut Porter, 5.7 percent, 24 IBU

A dry-hopped batch of Scuttlebutt’s porter with about 2 pounds of walnuts, provided by Skip Rock Distilling.

Recombobulator Dopplebock, 8 percent, 21 IBU

A tradiditional German-style lager is something to behold. Perfect sipping beer for those days when things become a bit discombobulated.
