STANWOOD — Watch flocks of birds in flight. Learn about the Stillaguamish River estuary. Eat some ice cream.
The Nature Conservancy is hosting a free family event from 1 to 4 p.m. Aug. 1 at its Port Susan Bay Preserve at the end of Boe Road south of Stanwood.
Called “Passport to Port Susan,” his is the event’s second year.
The preserve is not normally open to the public, so the event offers a chance to explore the preserve.
Scientists will be on hand to talk about the fascinating ecology of the estuary, as well as a variety of other topics including shore birds, skulls and climate change.
Face painting and prizes are planned, and an ice cream sandwich truck will be on site for families who want to buy a sweet treat.
Dogs and smoking are not allowed. Bring a hat and water.
From the Island Crossing exit from I-5, head west on Pioneer Highway through Silvana. Turn left on Norman Road. Cross Marine Drive and continue west on what is now Boe Road. A parking attendant dressed in an orange vest will direct you to a parking spot there at 9800 Boe Road. More information is available at www.washingtonnature.org/portsusanbayday.
For more family fun after your visit to the bay, head back over to Pioneer Highway to see the Stanwood-Camano Community Fair, which runs through Aug. 2.
Visit all the farm animals, check out the carnival, listen to some music and eat some fair food. Seniors and children are admitted for $7 and preschoolers are free. Adults pay $10 each.
More about the fair is at www.stanwoodcamanofair.org.
