Forty-five years ago, orcas were herded into Penn Cove. The young orcas were captured in nets and taken to theme parks around the world.
Orca Network is holding several events to commemorate the captures, in which 13 whales died.
From 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 8, a free event at the Coupeville Rec Hall will include educational displays, videos and kids activities. A 3 p.m. salmon ceremony at Coupeville Wharf will honor the captured orcas. From 4 to 8 p.m. there will be an auction, readings by several Puget Sound authors and live music, with food and drink.
For more information or to reserve a ticket for the evening event, go to www.orcanetwork.org.
