A brush fire in Japanese Gulch on Monday morning was sparked by an illegal campfire. Just before 6:30 a.m., people saw smoke in the trees about 200 feet east of the railroad tracks. Crews were on scene until after 9 a.m.
Dry weather with low humidity makes the entire region vulnerable for fires, Mukilteo Assistant Fire Chief Brian McMahan said.
People are again reminded to observe the burn ban, which likely will remain in effect until the fall. For information about your neighborhood’s restrictions, contact your local fire department. Despite some rumors, the small amount of fairly recent rainfall was not enough to lift the ban.
“Having a campfire in the woods and leaving it unattended is a recipe for disaster waiting to happen,” McMahan said.
