It was very sad to see another tragedy up at the Big Four ice caves. It’s such a beautiful spot it’s hard to imagine something like this happening there. It definitely is a reminder that life is fragile.
The trail was closed by the Forest Service shortly after the accident and as far as I know, is still closed. This a beautiful short trail that almost anyone can “do.” I’ve seen folks in walkers and wheelchairs since they improved the trail. I think it is a mistake to close this trail. We don’t close a highway after an automobile fatality, so why close this trail?
Risk and risk takers all vary. Some people take more risk every day than most take in their lifetime. Some of that risk is paid for, some is not. It is an old cliché, but life is risky. I think it is best to neither fear, nor tempt fate. Warn people of the risk and let them make their own choice. Happy trails.
