Gwen Stefani, Gavin Rossdale divorcing

Though they were rich, famous and incredibly good looking, they could not make it last. Let there be no doubt: Rocking celebrity couple Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale are parting ways after nearly 13 years of marriage.

“While the two of us have come to the mutual decision that we will no longer be partners in marriage, we remain partners in parenthood and are committed to jointly raising our three sons in a happy and healthy environment,” the soon-to-be former couple said in a statement, as Us Weekly reported. “To that end, we respectfully request privacy from the media during this time.”

The announcement that the possibly iconic No Doubt frontwoman turned pop diva and fashion plate could not achieve marital bliss with the not-at-all iconic, but still somewhat talented and very handsome Bush frontman took a toll on anyone who believed love could overcome the rigors of living life in the tabloid spotlight.

“Look at these two beautiful humans,” Jezebel’s Rachel Vorona Cote wrote. “Look at their hands, so firmly clasped as they partake in a lovers’ stroll. Yet nothing gold can stay, my dears.”

Though Planet Earth is inevitably shocked when a relatively long-lasting superstar union comes to end — in the case of Stefani and Rossdale, without the benefit of a prenuptual agreement, as TMZ reported — there were signs of trouble that could not be ignored.

“We both want to be married,” Stefani, perhaps too insistently, told the “Today” show earlier this year. “We both want to be good parents, and so I feel really proud of what we’ve done together and that we don’t … You’re gonna get me crying, no don’t, I’m going to get all emotional! But I am really proud of it.”

Meanwhile, in Rolling Stone, Rossdale was offering somewhat backhanded praise of his union with Stefani that hinted he had become the couple’s Art Garfunkel — and resented it. As RS put it: “Stefani … keeps him humble with her various stratospheric successes.”

“She’s taught me how to be a better person,” he said. And: “You might come in with two of something, and she’s got 12 of something,”

Alas and alack, the split, which Stefani said was due to irreconcilable differences, will be more than tabloid fodder for the couple’s three tastefully named children, of whom they are both seeking joint custody: Kingston, 9; Zuma, 6; and Apollo, 17 months.
