Bladder Grabber: No really, that’s what it’s called, and it’s not what it sounds like. The Bladder Grabber is a contest between model airplanes. Streamers are tied to the back of the planes, which try to fly behind their competitors and cut the streamers with their propellers. Spectators are sure to see plane crashes and mid-air collisions. Everyone loves a fair: The Whidbey Island Fair runs through Sunday in Langley. There will be 4-H activities, art displays, rides, food and all the other fun you expect at a fair.
Made with care: The Handmade and Homegrown Festival is 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday in downtown Marysville. There will be more than 100 vendors.
Strut it: Bring your dog to the Mutt Strut from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Langus Riverfront Park, 400 Smith Island Road, Everett. The community dog walk includes competitions and prizes. Get more info in our story.
Greenery: The Fronderosa Frolic is 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, 107th St. SE, Gold Bar. The exotic plant fair features unique plants and garden decor.
Working dogs: Check out the Northwest Classic Sheepdog Trials from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday at Ninety Farms, 22912 67th Ave. NE , Arlington, off Highway 9 just north of Highway 530. Border collie and handler teams from across the nation will demonstrate traditional herding skills. Children’s activities, from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, include fiber crafting, soap felting and the chance to interact with lambs. Covered seating for spectators. Dogs on leash welcome. Cost is $5 for adults; free for ages 12 and younger.
Jazz: See the Dmitri Matheny Group perform at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Tim Noah Thumbnail Theater, 1211 Fourth St., Snohomish. Find out more in our story.
Art at work: See how artists create from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday at the Port of Edmonds Plaza, 336 Admiral Way. Cody French will demonstrate various techniques with watercolors and drawing on paper and birch panel. Lonni Flowers will be painting with water media and showing how she creates her work. The Sea Jazz Band will perform.
