EVERETT — The Everett AquaSox sure are selfless.
The Frogs used two sacrifice flies and a game-winning RBI single by Corey Simpson, which was almost a third but was just out of reach for Tri-City center fielder Rod Boykin, to cap a 3-2 come-from-behind victory in the bottom of the 10th inning on Star Wars Night at Everett Memorial Stadium.
Everett, which leads the Northwest League with 28 sacrifice flies, scored its first two runs on sacrifice flies in the bottom of the first inning by Simpson and the eighth by Logan Taylor. Both fly balls scored Drew Jackson, who was 2-for-4 with a walk and a double.
Jackson also scored in the 10th, accounting for all three Everett runs.
The AquaSox had a chance to score in the bottom of the seventh when Arturo Nieto and Ryan Uhl led off the inning with back-to-back singles — the Frogs’ first hits since the opening inning. But the AquaSox couldn’t get another runner across.
A similar opportunity came for Everett (4-5 second half, 26-21 overall) in the bottom of the ninth after two walks put runners on first and second with one out. But pinch hitter Luis Liberato hit a line drive on which Tri-City right fielder Mason Smith made a diving catch and quickly threw to second base for a double play.
Tri-City got a run in the top of the first inning on a wild pitch by Everett starter Jake Brentz and added another on an RBI double by Peter Van Gansen in the second.
Brentz made his first start for the Mariners organization after coming from Toronto as part of the Mark Lowe trade on July 31st, pitching the first inning for the AquaSox. Another piece obtained in that trade, Nick Wells, came in to start the fourth and allowed just one hit and struck out eight in five innings of relief.
Kyle Wilcox (2-1) pitched the 10th to earn the win for Everett.
