SEATTLE — While many neighborhoods fight the idea of having homeless people living nearby, one Seattle neighborhood is requesting a formal homeless camp.
KING-TV reported community leaders in Yesler Terrace say recurring problems with homeless living along Interstate 5 could be solved with a city-sponsored camp. There have been fights and shootings among homeless people the area and neighbors are searching for a better way.
Current camps approved by the city are maintained by residents who govern themselves. Most of the homeless in Yesler Terrace live on Washington Department of Transportation property so the city cannot regulate the camps.
Mayor Ed Murray recently announced the location of three new city-sponsored encampments. Community leaders are urging the city to sponsor a camp on Yesler, but the land would have to be donated.
